The Sacred Ordinary: Finding Connection in Postpartum

Not every sacred moment looks sacred.

Sometimes it looks like cold coffee.

A shower you finally got to take.

Folding tiny onesies at midnight.

Your partner making you something to eat while the baby sleeps.

Two exhausted people passing the baby back and forth and whispering, “Are you okay?”

This is the sacred ordinary of postpartum.

And perhaps this season isn't asking you to rush back to who you were.

Perhaps it's asking you to slow down enough to meet who you are becoming.

You Were Born, Too

When a baby is born, everyone wants to meet the baby.

But there is another person who has just arrived:

You.

A mother.

A new version of you that you've never met before.

Postpartum recovery isn't only physical healing. It can also be an emotional and identity-changing experience as you discover this new role and the person you're becoming.

You may find yourself changing in ways you didn't expect.

Your priorities may shift.

Your capacity may feel different.

Your relationship with your body may change.

Even your relationship with your partner may feel unfamiliar.

And that's okay.

You are both learning a new language.

Finding Your Way Back to Each Other

Your relationship may not look the same after having a baby.

Maybe connection becomes quieter.

A hand on the back while you're feeding the baby.

A kiss in the kitchen.

Laughing together over something ridiculous at 3 a.m.

Sharing a meal.

Sitting beside each other without needing to talk.

Postpartum intimacy doesn't have to begin with romance.

Sometimes it begins withbeing seen.

Ask each other:

How are you, really?

What do you need today?

What feels hard right now?

What would help you feel loved?

You don't have to find your old relationship again.

You get to discover the new relationship you're creating together.

The Sacred Ordinary

There may not be many grand moments right now.

But there are thousands of tiny ones.

I often like to reflect on the fact that the little moments ARE often the big moments…

The baby's warm head resting against your chest.

Sunlight across the bedroom floor.

Your partner bringing you water.

A sleepy smile.

A five-minute walk.

A quiet morning.

Your body slowly healing.

You learning how to soothe your baby.

Your baby learning your voice.

You learning yourself.

This is motherhood.

Not just the extraordinary moments.

The ordinary ones, too.

And maybe that is where the sacredness lives.

In the repetition.

In the slowness.

In the becoming.

In the ordinary daily life where you get to meet this new woman—

you.

Because when your baby was born,

a mother was born, too.

And you don't have to figure her out all at once.

Take your time.

She's worth getting to know.
